FONAFIFO, a Costa Rican governmental institution, have been instrumental in the development of the Environmental Services Payment Program (Programa de Pago de Servicios Ambientales - PSA), an innovative approach to forestry development that has set an example for the entire world by recognising that forests are useful for more than producing timber.
In addition to having a green fleet, we further our environmental commitment through the Green Heart Donation, an initiative that allows our customers to reduce their CO2 footprint, by offsetting the emissions produced while driving one of our vehicles. During the booking process, customers will be asked whether or not they would like to make a Green Heart Donation of either $1, £1 or €1. All donations go to the “Environmental Services Payment (PSA) Program” through FONAFIFO.
We are proud to support such a great cause, and are delighted to hear they have been awarded Prince William's Earthshot prize, which is very well deserved. FONAFIFO has enabled Costa Rica to double the number of trees in the country, where it was once cleared of most of its forests. The scheme pays local citizens to protect and restore rainforests and local eco-systems, a system that the prize committee credits for having already reversed decades of deforestation.
The annual awards were created by the Duke of Cambridge to reward people trying to save the planet. Sticking with the eco theme, the music was powered by 60 cyclists pedalling on bikes, no plastic was used to build the stage and guests were asked to "consider the environment" when choosing an outfit, a fantastic example to be set by the likes of Emma Watson, Coldplay and Ed Sheeran.
We hope the awards help to highlight the work we can all do, and need to do, to help protect our planet.
